Moscow May Return to START Treaty: Russian Ambassador in London Reveals Situation

Russian Ambassador to Britain Andrei Kelin said on Friday that Russia’s return to the START treaty is possible if the United States abandons its strategic goal of bypassing Russia.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, he said: “It is possible (returning to the START treaty) if the US changes its goal of winning a strategic victory over Russia.”

In his speech to the Federal Assembly on Tuesday, February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the suspension of Russia’s participation in the START-3 Strategic Offensive Arms Treaty, stressing that Moscow had not withdrawn from the treaty.

He pointed out that before returning to the discussion, “we must understand for ourselves what else countries like France and Great Britain require, and how we will take into account their strategic arsenals, that is, NATO’s joint strike potential.”
