The Moroccan Football Federation Postpones Match Against Liberia Due to Earthquake

The Moroccan Football Federation has announced that its match against Liberia, scheduled for Saturday in the final round of Africa Cup of Nations qualifying, has been postponed “to a later date” due to a strong earthquake that hit Morocco on Friday night, Saturday.

Postponement Announcement

The Moroccan Football Federation wrote in a statement: “Following the earthquake that occurred in some areas of Morocco, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation announces the postponement of the match that was scheduled to take place on Saturday evening, September 9, 2023, between the national team and its Liberian counterpart… until a later date, in accordance with the decision of the African Union.”

Morocco’s Qualification

Morocco qualified for the continental final, scheduled for early 2024 in Ivory Coast, as it picked up six points from three matches after two wins over leaders South Africa 2-1 and Liberia 2-0 and defeat at home to South Africa 1-2, in a group that included three teams instead of four after Zimbabwe’s elimination.

Marrakesh Hosts Crucial Showdown

The Moroccan city of Marrakesh was also due to host a crucial showdown between Gambia and Congo tomorrow, Sunday, in Group 7 for the second spot that will join Mali in the finals.

Earthquake Casualties

The death toll from the earthquake in Morocco, whose epicenter was in the Isis community in Al-Hawz province, has risen to 820 dead and 672 injured, according to preliminary data from the Ministry of Interior.

FIFA President Expresses Condolences

In the same context, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, through his Instagram account, expressed his condolences to the families and friends of the earthquake victims: “I am shocked and saddened by the news of the earthquake that occurred last night in Morocco, a country that warmly welcomed us to the Club World Cup at the beginning of the year. All thoughts of FIFA employees are addressed to the victims, and I also express my sincere condolences to the families and relatives of the victims.”

International Solidarity

Many international clubs expressed solidarity with the victims of the Moroccan earthquake.
