Military plane with the President of Sri Lanka landed in the Maldives

A military plane carrying Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa landed in the Maldives after leaving his country on Wednesday morning.

An An-32 military plane took off from Colombo International Airport with four people on board, including the 73-year-old president, his wife and a bodyguard, immigration officials told AFP.

“They had their passports stamped and they boarded an SAF flight,” the immigration official said.

The plane remained on the runway for more than an hour, unable to take off due to confusion over whether the Maldivian authorities allowed it to land on their territory, the airport said.

Rajapaksa vowed to announce his resignation on Wednesday, saying he wants to ensure a “peaceful transfer of power.”
