Ghana national team player Christian Atsu was under the rubble as a result of a devastating earthquake that occurred on Monday in southeastern Turkey, said the vice president of the Turkish club Hatayspor, in which the player is a professional.
“Taner Safwat (team sports director) and Christian Atsu are still under the rubble,” Vice President Mustafa Ezzat told Turkey’s Play Sport YouTube channel.
“They are trying to escape,” he said.
For its part, the Ghana Football Association said on its Twitter account: “We pray for Ghana international Christian Atsu and the victims of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria. a difficult situation”.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Christian Atsu and our brothers and sisters in Turkey and Syria. We remain hopeful for positive news.”
For his part, Ghanaian President Nana Afuku-Addo tweeted: “Our prayers and hearts are with the survivors and we pray that our citizen of Ghana, Christian Atsu, is found safe and sound.”
And 31-year-old Atsu moved to Hatayspor in September last year from Saudi Al Raed.
Atsu spent five seasons at Newcastle from 2016 to 2021 before moving to Saudi club Al Raed.
