Massachusetts experiences garbage train accident

A freight train carrying trash and recycling materials derailed in Massachusetts, and firefighters have asked the public to avoid the area.

The Air City Fire Department said the train derailed around noon and was stopped when the carriages derailed.

Footage from the scene shows five of the train’s cars overturned and the contents of the freight containers they were carrying spilled onto the side of the track. The steam locomotives of south Norfolk were connected to the train.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency reported that 10 vehicles had derailed, but fire officials in Ayr later reported that only five vehicles had derailed, with two others overturning.

Carrier CSX said its employees responded to the incident because the line it happened on is co-owned with Norfolk Southern.

According to the company, the derailed train was operated by the Springfield Terminals, the accident did not result in injuries or environmental impact, and there were no leaks.
