Manchester City sign Swiss defender Akanji from Borussia Dortmund

Manchester City have signed Swiss international defender Manuel Akanji from Germany’s Borussia Dortmund to a five-year deal, the English champions announced on Thursday.

“The 27-year-old centre-back will arrive with a five-year contract until 2027,” which the English press has estimated at nearly €20 million, according to a statement on the club’s official website.

Akanji will take on his former Dortmund teammate, Norwegian striker Erling Haaland, who is off to a great start in the Premier League with nine goals in his first five matches.

In an interview with the club’s official website, he said: City have been one of the best teams in Europe in recent seasons. They are fun to watch, play exciting football and compete for titles every year, so coming here is perfect. step in my career.

He continued: “There is nothing better than being here under Pep Guardiola. The combination of coach and club is perfect for me.”

Akanji spoke about Halland after they played two seasons together at Dortmund, who contacted him when he heard City were looking for a defender: “He has an amazing combination of skills. He is fast and very strong physically, but he is also technically proficient.”

Akanji (41 caps) started his career at Ventetura before moving to Basel in 2015 and from there to Borussia Dortmund in 2018.

In four years in Germany, he won the DFB-Pokal in 2021 and the German Super Cup in 2019.
