Lukashenko Pushes for Belarus’ Membership in the Shanghai Organization Ahead of 2023 Delhi Summit

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has announced his country’s desire to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization before the summit in Delhi in 2023.

This was reported by the Telegram channel close to the presidential press service about Lukashenka: “We have set ourselves an ambitious goal, to go all the way to joining the organization before the summit in Delhi. be a good experience for others.”

The document on initiating the procedures for the admission of Belarus to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization was signed following the organization’s summit in Samarkand, which was held from September 15 to 16, 2022. Lukashenka said that Belarus, which is still an observer in the organization, expects to receive membership in the Shanghai SCO within a year.

The accession protocol was signed following consultations between the authorized representatives of the SCO member states and the authorized representative of Belarus in January last year. According to the press service of the Foreign Ministry, the Belarusian side expressed its readiness to speed up the implementation of international legal procedures for joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization as a full member.

And in February, Lukashenka signed a decree approving a memorandum on the obligations of the republic to obtain the status of a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Registration of participation requires the signing and ratification of this memorandum, as well as accession to a number of documents that form the legal basis for the accession process, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Sergei Allink said at the end of February that the rapid registration of Minsk’s membership in the organization is the most important task in 2023.
