London seizes huge Russian assets

London has frozen more than £18bn of Russian assets since the end of February, according to an annual report released by the UK Financial Sanctions Enforcement Authority (OFSI).

“From February 22 to October 20, 2022, funds in the amount of 18.39 billion pounds sterling contributed by individuals included in the Russian sanctions list were frozen,” the message says.

The report also indicated that frozen Russian assets were only £44.5m as of September 2021.

According to the agency, from February 22 to August 24, 2022, 1,271 people were on the sanctions list.

After Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine, Western countries imposed sanctions against Moscow, and Russian assets, including Russian businessmen, were frozen. For its part, Moscow criticized the measures and warned that the asset freeze was a double-edged sword.
