"Lockheed Martin" American and"Raphael" Two Israelis jointly develop a laser system (photo)

US arms company Lockheed Martin and Israeli defense contractor Rafael announced on Monday that they are collaborating to develop a high-energy laser system to repel air attacks.

The system will be based on the Iron Beam laser missile defense system developed by Rafael in conjunction with the Israeli Ministry of Defense.

The Iron Beam has gone through a series of successful trials this year and is expected to be deployed over the next decade.

The joint product will be directed to the markets of the USA and other countries.

The companies said that development, testing and production will take place in the United States and Israel.

Frank St. John, Lockheed’s chief operating officer, said the deal would help clients “stay one step ahead of their enemies” and added that “engaging on security” with Israel was an honor.

The state-owned Rafael developed the Iron Beam system to complement the series of air defense systems used by Israel, including the highly effective Iron Dome system, but it is also very expensive given that it is part of a multi-layered defense system that Israel is developing land, sea and air defenses against everything from short-range missiles to long-range guided missiles.
