League of Nations.. Hungary stuns Germany and Italy sends England to the second level

Hungary pulled off a brilliant 1-0 victory over Germany and Italy sent away England to the second tier by beating them by the same scoreline on Friday in Group C of the European Nations League.

In Leipzig, Germany, Hungary continued their impressive run and dealt coach Hansi Flick’s men England, who lost 0-4 at home, boost their chances of reaching the Nations League semi-finals.

Hungary could have sealed their qualification with this first win over Germany in official competition since the group stage of the 1972 Olympics in Munich (4-1) had Italy not managed to beat England in Milan thanks to a 68th-minute goal by Giacomo Raspadori.

Hungary owes its third victory in this group and a two-point lead over its new runner-up and next rival, Italy, to Adam Chalay, who scored the only goal in the 17th minute.

With a third defeat after two they suffered 0-1 against Hungary in the latter’s territory and 0-4 among its supporters, England dropped to the second tier of the Nations League ahead of Monday’s meeting with rival Germany at Wembley, while Italy is a guest of Hungary in Budapest.
