Lavrov: We hope that provocations around Taiwan can be avoided

Amid news of a possible visit by Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed that Moscow’s position on the Taiwan issue has not changed.

Lavrov stated this at a press conference following the meeting of foreign ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Tashkent on Friday.

US media have previously reported that Pelosi will embark on an Asian tour that may include Taiwan, but no decision has yet been made on whether to visit the island.

“For us, this issue is clear enough. Our position on the existence of a “united China” has not changed. The United States from time to time verbally confirms the same position, but in practice, as you understand, there is no constant correspondence. between actions and words,” Lavzef said.

“We have no problem in respecting the principle of China’s sovereignty, and we proceed from the fact that there are no provocative actions or provocations that could aggravate the situation” in the region, he added.
