Lavrov: Calling NATO a defensive alliance is stupid and shameful

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov felt that statements that NATO is a purely defensive alliance now seem stupid and shameful.

Lavrov stated this during a meeting with students and teachers of the Belarusian State University in Minsk on Friday.

“The White House spokesman recently reiterated that Russia should not be afraid of NATO, and no one should be afraid at all, because NATO is a defensive alliance,” the Secretary of State said.

Lavrov added that NATO no longer hides that the alliance intends to draw the next “line of defense” in the South China Sea.

He said: “Now they say that NATO should acquire a global dimension in terms of responsibility for security around the world, and when they talk about the Indo-Pacific region, this term is coined precisely in an attempt to involve India in its participation. “

Lavrov recalled that in the final documents of the latest NATO summit in Madrid, China is classified as “the main, systemic and long-term challenge” for the alliance.

The Russian minister pointed out that NATO seeks to find an external enemy to justify its existence, because after the disappearance of the Warsaw Pact and the Soviet Union, the preservation of NATO has lost all meaning.

Yesterday, at meetings with Belarusian officials in Minsk, Lavrov said that the West is trying to impose its dictatorship on everyone, but some Western countries have begun to realize the impossibility of building a security structure without Russia and Belarus.
