Kyiv confirmed that it will not take steps to join NATO

Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Igor Zhovkova confirmed that his country does not intend to take steps to join NATO, realizing the futility of these efforts because of the positions of some NATO countries.

Igor Zhovkva confirmed in an interview published today, on Saturday, with the British Financial Times that Kyiv does not intend to take steps to join NATO, as it is aware of the futility of these efforts due to the position of some countries in the alliance.

“NATO members have rejected our aspirations. We will not do anything in this direction,” Zhovkva said. At the same time, he expressed hope that the conflict in Ukraine would be taken into account in the formation of NATO’s Strategic Concept for the coming years, which is expected to be adopted next week at the alliance’s summit in Madrid.

“If NATO members do not deal with what is actually happening in Europe, in Ukraine, it will be just another document that means absolutely nothing,” Zhovkva said.

In his opinion, “NATO’s strategic concept should contain tougher formulations” with regard to Russia. “It’s not enough to just cross out the word ‘partner’,” he added.

Zovkva noted the need for Western countries to provide Kyiv with “security guarantees” to prevent possible future Russian military actions in Ukraine. The Ukrainian authorities are currently negotiating this issue with representatives of the United States, Britain, Germany and France.

The next NATO meeting at the level of heads of state and government will be held June 28-30 in the Spanish capital. Where the new strategic concept is formulated, the strengthening of the alliance and the impact of global climate change on the security sector will be discussed.
