Kremlin: Russia continues to pay Ukraine for gas transit

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday that Moscow is fulfilling its obligations to pay money for the transit of natural gas from Russia to Europe through Ukraine.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Peskov noted that Kyiv continues to accept money from Moscow for transit, despite the fact that it considers Russia an “aggressor country.”

Regarding the volume of gas that can be pumped through Nord Stream 2 if it is launched, the Russian presidential spokesman said that Russia would be able to supply about 27 billion cubic meters along the route to Europe if it were launched.

He said: “Gazprom” annually allocated 55 billion cubic meters of gas for delivery (via Nord Stream-2), and huge funds were spent. Of course, in this case, Gazprom should think about what is needed, and once again I want to invite you to remember Putin’s statements made by him in Tehran that Gazprom must do something to recoup the money spent, and that means half of 55 billion. That is, 27 billion, which will be used in projects in Russia.”

The official added: “Even if we finally imagine that we will now operate (Nord Stream 2), by the end of the year we will be able to pump 27 billion cubic meters, no more. Half of the volume allocated for domestic consumption was directed”.

The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is fully built, but not yet opened. His testimony had already been suspended under the supervision of incumbent German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on February 22, after Russia recognized the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics.
