Kibigon covered the distance in 3 minutes 49.11 seconds, breaking the previous record set by Ethiopian Genzebe Dibaba (3 minutes 50.07 seconds) in February 1991.

The 29-year-old Kenyan sprinter is a world and Olympic champion, while Kipyegon won a silver medal at the world championships twice.

It is noteworthy that Russian athletes cannot participate in competitions under the auspices of the International Association of Athletics Federations, despite the fact that the ARAF in March last year restored its membership in the International Federation, which was suspended in March 2022 by a decision of the board of the organization that decided not to allow participation in the competitions of representatives of Russia and Belarus.
