The new Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, Yasunoshi Nishimura, met with the head of Mitsubishi Corporation and asked him to positively consider further participation in the Sakhalin-2 project.
“Observers believe that Mitsubishi Corporation is respectful of such a request from the authorities,” Kyodo reported.
Earlier in August, former Japanese Economy Minister Koichi Hagiuda said he spoke with the president of Mitsui & Co. and conveyed to him the Government’s request for a favorable consideration of the matter.
The Sakhalin-2 project is of great importance for Japan, as it provides almost all of the liquefied natural gas imported from Russia.
Japanese authorities claim that Sakhalin-2 fuel is used to generate about 3% of the country’s total electricity. Japanese corporations Mitsui and Mitsubishi Corporation own 12.5% and 10% respectively in this project.
