Italy to receive aid from European Commission to tackle floods

The European Commission has announced that the Italian authorities have activated the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism to deal with floods and landslides in the Emilia-Romagna region.

“The request for assistance concerns high-capacity pumping equipment from the European Civil Protection Mechanism,” the European Commission said in a statement.

The EU quickly organized offers of such equipment to Italy from Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and France through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

Brussels indicated that the European Emergency Response Coordination Center is in constant contact with the Italian authorities and that the European Union stands ready to provide further assistance if necessary.

The European Commission said the European Union’s Copernicus satellite system also provided a map of the affected areas at the request of the Italian Civil Protection Authority.
