Italy: 56 migrants rescued and transferred to Lampedusa

Italian security sources have announced that the 56 migrants reported yesterday by Watch The Med NGO Alarm Phone have been rescued and transferred to the Sicilian island of Lampedusa.

The Humanitarian Project stated: “The 56 people we reported have arrived at Lampedusa and are now safe,” noting that “the boat they were on, which had left the coast of Tunisia, ran out of fuel and was left at the mercy of the waves.”

Alarm Phone was founded in October 2014 by a network of activists and civil society representatives in Europe and North Africa. It sets up a self-organized hotline for refugees in distress in the waters of the Mediterranean, on boats in distress, to give them a chance at survival.
