Israeli President attends Joe Biden’s medal ceremony

Israeli President Isaac Herzog is expected to present the Presidential Medal of Honor to US President Joe Biden in a ceremony at his home when he visits the country next week.

The Presidential Medal of Honor is awarded to individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to the advancement of Israel or mankind through their talent, service, or in any other way. The award, initiated by the late ninth President of Israel, Shimon Peres, was first presented in 2012.

So far, 26 people have received this honor on the recommendation of an advisory committee chaired by retired Chief Justice Meir Shamgar.

When Isaac Herzog took office, he re-established an advisory committee headed by former Supreme Court Justice Yoram Danziger to screen candidates.

Previous recipients of the Presidential Medal of Honor have included Barack Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, former Chief Rabbi Israel Meir Lau, Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel, Yad Vashem President Avner Shalev, former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Rabbi Aden Steinsaltz and others.
