Israeli PM holds emergency meeting after Russia tries to ban Jewish Immigration Agency

Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid assessed the situation with representatives of the Foreign Ministry and the National Security Council regarding the activities of the Jewish Migration Agency in Russia.

During the meeting, it was decided to send a joint delegation from the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, the Ministries of Justice and the Ministry of Immigration and Integration to ensure the continued operation of the Jewish Agency in Russia.

Lapid emphasized that “the Jewish community in Russia is deeply connected with Israel. Its importance is evident in every diplomatic conversation with the Russian leadership. We will continue to work through diplomatic channels to keep the important activities of the Jewish Agency going.”

The international organization “Jewish Agency of Israel (Sahnot)” – an organization dealing with providing links between Jews all over the world, as well as issues of Jewish immigration to Israel, was founded in 1929, the representative offices of the Jewish Agency have been operating in Russia since 1989. The Israeli newspaper Walla, citing its sources, stated that Israel resorted to Russian help to ascertain the status of the Jewish Agency Sakhnot and its activities in Russia.
