Hungarian Foreign Minister: Russia does not rule out the possibility of amending gas contracts

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Ciarto said that Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, in a conversation with him, did not rule out making changes to gas contracts between Moscow and Budapest in the event of gas price restrictions.

“I held telephone consultations with Russian Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Alexander Novak. He has shown an openness to the possibility of making changes to the long-term gas contracts between Hungary and Russia, if necessary, due to the limitation of gas prices,” Sjarto told reporters on Tuesday.

Notably, a gas price cap is currently being discussed in the European Union to reduce market volatility and protect consumers in the European Union from price spikes.

A meeting of EU energy ministers ended in Brussels on Tuesday, but they failed to agree on a price ceiling, the Hungarian foreign minister said.
