Hungarian foreign minister discusses with leadership "Rosatom" Nuclear power plant expansion

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Sjarto discussed with the head of the Russian company Rosatom Alexei Likhachev and company executives in Sochi the expansion of the Baksh nuclear power plant.

“The expansion of the Baksh nuclear power plant is in the interests of both the national strategy and the national security of Hungary. It is not surprising that a week later we are sitting at the negotiating table with Alexei Likhachev and the leadership (Rosatom),” Ciarto wrote on social networks. Previous talks were held in Samarkand as part of a summit of Turkic states, which considered the necessary steps to complete the construction of two new power units before the end of the decade.

“In the short term, the forum (Atom Expo) in Sochi provides an opportunity to make calculations and define new tasks,” the minister continued.

The international forum “Atom Expo” opened today, on Monday, November 21, in the Russian city of Sochi, in the Park of Science and Arts “Sirius”.

At the end of August last year, the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority issued a general license for the construction of the fifth and sixth power units of the Baksh NPP, the reactor building of the fifth power unit and 6 construction permits (nuclear island)”, as the Hungarian government expressed its intention to extend the life of the power units of the Baksh NPP.

It is noteworthy that Baksh is the only nuclear power plant in Hungary, “it is located 100 kilometers from Budapest and five kilometers from the city of Baksh. The station was built according to the Soviet design and operates in four units with VVER. -440 reactors, currently produces half of the electricity consumed in the country.

At the end of 2014, Russia and Hungary signed an agreement on the construction of two new power units at the station – No. 5 and No. 6 with modern VVER-1200 reactors.

According to the agreement, Russia will provide Hungary with a state loan in the amount of 10 billion euros to cover the costs of the project, and the total cost of the work will be 12.5 billion euros.
