Belgian captain Eden Hazard believes the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which starts Sunday in Qatar, “may be the last chance for this generation to win something.”
“In 2018, we were at the peak of our level. Now I play less than before. Romelu Lukaku is injured. The defenders are a bit older, but we will show that Belgium will be the favourites,” the 31-year-old winger said during a press conference in Tubias, south of the capital, Brussels.
He added about the current generation of the Belgian national team, often referred to as the “golden” team, which finished third at the 2018 World Cup in Russia with the best result in its history at the World Cup: “It is quite likely that this will be the last big tournament for many players. We have to give it our all.”
Although he has been on the bench in most of his matches for his Spanish club Real Madrid, Hazard believes that “he has not become a bad player in two or three years.”
“Given what I have done in the last two years, I don’t deserve to be on the field, but I do deserve it for what I have done in the last 15 years. I understand that people doubt, but it depends on me. me to prove them wrong. Personally, I don’t doubt it.”
Belgium, whose only title remains 1920 Olympic gold on home soil, was placed in Group E for the 2022 World Cup along with Canada, Morocco and Croatia, who finished second in the world.
