Guterres is ready to mediate in the Ukrainian crisis, subject to the consent of all parties

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in response to Kyiv’s initiative, declared his readiness to mediate in the issue of the crisis in Ukraine only with the consent of all parties, including Russia.

“As the Secretary General has repeatedly stated in the past, he can only mediate if all parties want him to mediate,” the Secretary General’s office said.

On Monday, the Ukrainian authorities proposed holding a “peace summit” at the UN before the end of February next year, with the participation of UN Secretary General António Guterres as a possible mediator. At the same time, Kyiv said that Russia should be invited to negotiations only after “war crimes.” trials are held in the “international” court.

Commenting on the proposal, the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov noted that Russia has never been led by external circumstances.

And in early November, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, after Western media reports that Kyiv insisted on a dialogue with Moscow, outlined his conditions for starting negotiations.

According to him, his conditions are “the restoration of territorial integrity, compliance with the UN Charter, compensation for all losses, punishment of every war criminal and guarantees that Russia will not repeat its act.”
