Guterres called for an agreement to ensure safety at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant

UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for an urgent agreement to restore the civil status of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant and ensure the security of the region.

“This site should not be used in the context of any military operation,” Guterres said at a press conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

He added: “It is urgent to agree on the return of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, a purely civilian infrastructure, and to ensure the security of the region.”

He was concerned about the development of the situation at the Zaporozhye NPP and around it.

“Common sense must prevail to avoid any action that could jeopardize the safety of the nuclear plant,” he added.

He stressed that causing any possible damage to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is suicide.

He noted that the UN could support the visit of the IAEA inspectors to the Zaporozhye NPP only if the mission went there via Kyiv.

Regarding the developments in Linovka, Guterres announced that he would appoint Brazil’s representative to the UN as the head of the fact-finding mission. He stressed that the United Nations was working to ensure safe access to the pre-trial detention center in the city of Lilinovka in the Donetsk People’s Republic.

He believes continued food and fertilizer exports from Russia and Ukraine are critical to achieving market stability.
