Giuseppe Conte: Military support for Ukraine is not a priority

The head of the Italian Five Star movement, former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, said that the strategy of Western military assistance to Ukraine contributed to the incitement of the conflict.

“We believe that the phase of symmetry has ended and a breakthrough is needed through peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow,” Conte told reporters Thursday night in the Italian presidency after meeting with President Sergio Mattarella as part of the latter’s consultations. with parliamentary forces to form a new government.

Conte, who will join the opposition to a future center-right government led by Jorga Meloni, added that the U.S. continues to supply Ukrainians with arsenals and I don’t see that as a priority.

“More than 200 days have passed since the adoption of the military support strategy for Ukraine, which only led to a military escalation that puts us in danger of a nuclear conflict and a catastrophic economic crisis,” he said.

“Therefore, it is necessary to open the way for peace talks for a ceasefire,” said Conte, who said the movement would not vote for a new military aid package for Kyiv.
