German newspaper: Gas prices in Germany will rise by 112% starting from the new year

The German economic newspaper Handelsblatt reported that the German population expects a significant increase in gas and electricity prices in 2023, despite the measures taken to reduce energy prices.

The newspaper stated, citing a study conducted by the Verivox platform, that: “Gas prices will rise by 112%, which means that the cost of energy is rising sharply, despite the measures taken by the German government to reduce energy prices amid the crisis, in which the country is floundering.”

According to the study, consumers with an average gas consumption of 20,000 kilowatt-hours per year from January next year on an annualized basis will have to pay an average of 2,756 euros to 1,457 euros, which is 112 percent more than last fall.

Electricity consumers in Germany will have to pay about 44% more in January than last autumn.

According to the newspaper, government intervention will help reduce electricity prices by only 5 percent.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced in November that the German government had agreed packages to lower energy prices, including gas and electricity.

The vice-speaker of the German parliament, Wolfgang Kupecki, warned that the country, due to its inability to solve the energy crisis and a number of other problems, risks becoming bankrupt and a dysfunctional state.
