Gas futures prices in Europe rose to the highest level since 1996

Gas futures prices in Europe rose to a record high for the first time since 1996, reaching $2,861.6 per thousand cubic meters.

According to the London Stock Exchange, the settlement price of gas futures contracts in Europe (for delivery in September) hit a record high for the first time since 1996, reaching $2,861.6 per thousand cubic meters.

The Russian company Gazprom announced on Friday the suspension of gas transportation via Nord Stream 1 from August 31 to September 2 in connection with a scheduled repair of the only operating gas pumping unit at the Portovaya station.

After this news, September gas futures for the TTF index began to grow rapidly, jumping by the evening of the same day by almost eight percent above $2,700 per thousand cubic meters for the first time since March.

But it was actually up 20 percent yesterday morning to top $3,000, closing just below $2,900.
