Galatasaray Secures 23rd Turkish League Title with Icardi as Key Player

Argentina’s Mauro Icardi led his Galatasaray team to the Turkish title for the 23rd time in their history, scoring a brace in a 4-1 win over Ankara Gogo on Tuesday in the penultimate 34th stage.

Icardi, on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, scored his brace in the seventh and 38th minutes to increase his tally to 21 goals with seven assists.

Paris Albert Yilmaz added the third goal (73) and the Portuguese Sergio Oliveira the fourth (78), while the Angolan Melson scored the only goal for the Ankara Gogo club in the 16th minute.

It is Galatasaray’s first title since the 2018–2019 season and the 23rd in its history to confirm its record for most titles, with a four title difference from Fenerbahçe, who have been absent from titles since 2014.

Galatasaray, who ended last season in thirteenth place in their worst ever position, extended their lead with 82 points, five points more than Fenerbahçe.

The wards of coach Okan Borok will celebrate the championship next Sunday during the derby against Fenerbahce.

Galatasaray benefited greatly from their signing last summer with Icardi and Uruguayan Lucas Torreira before he included Belgian Dries Mertens, Oliveira and Italy’s Nicolo Zaniolo in the winter transfer period.
