French interior ministry proposes linking residence permit to French language proficiency

French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin has announced that, at the request of the Prime Minister, he will propose requiring foreigners to speak French in order to grant them residence permits in France.

He stated that “at the request of the Prime Minister, we will double the integration credit and require, in particular, a multi-year residence permit for foreigners who spend several years in the country, subject to mastering the French language.”

“For a multi-year residency, it will be necessary to justify the minimum level of French,” he added.
