France hopes Meloni’s new government will implement Draghi’s reforms

French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire expressed hope that the future government of Italy, led by the leader of the Brothers of Italy party, George Meloni, will continue the reforms initiated by her predecessor, Mario Draghi.

Le Maire said he was not concerned about the stability of the eurozone after Meloni’s victory in Italy’s legislative elections, stressing that Rome’s decision would be based on “facts”.

He added: “We are not persecuting the leaders of a friendly country who have just come” to power.

Meloni is expected to become Italy’s first female prime minister if her party agrees to form a governing coalition with its two partners and receives a government-forming mandate from President Sergio Mattarella.

Negotiations on forming a coalition will only begin with the start of a new parliament in mid-October.

The centre-left led by the Social Democratic Party, the Five Star Movement and the Center Alliance were unable to stop the advance of their opponents.
