French fire brigades managed to put out a blaze that badly damaged pine forests in the southwest of the country, taking advantage of the rain on Sunday.
Ronan Lustik, a spokesman for the Gironde district, said authorities have allowed approximately 8,000 evacuees to return to their homes.
The fire that has broken out since Tuesday in the Gironde and Zemlya regions has destroyed more than 74 square kilometers.
More than 360 firefighters arrived in France on Friday from Germany, Romania, Poland and Austria to help put out the blaze, joining more than 1,000 French firefighters on site. Greece and Italy sent two planes to fight the fires.
The heatwaves exacerbated the severe drought that hit much of Europe, leading to wildfires.
