Maldives Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid warned that the disappearance of the island nation due to climate change would put the entire world in mortal danger.

“We can drown in the water, but in this case, this planet will become an uninhabited place for everyone, not only for the inhabitants of the Maldives, but also for the Russians, due to the strength of storms, the rapid melting of glaciers and desertification. also,” he said in an interview with TASS today, on Monday. Therefore, we need coordinated climate cooperation.”

And the minister added that he is optimistic by nature and does not believe that his country will disappear, “but the only way to prevent this is the joint efforts of the entire international community. The Maldives is committed to delivering on its carbon pledge.” neutrality, which means that we, as a country, will reduce our carbon emissions.”

He added: “If a small country can do it, then a big country should be able to do it. We call on big countries to take this path.”

The Republic of Maldives is located on over a thousand coral islands in the Indian Ocean, of which just over 200 are inhabited. Most of the islands are located at a height of 1 meter above sea level.

According to various forecasts, including the World Bank, with the possibility of sea level rise by 10-100 cm by 2100, the Maldives may go under water. And by 2050, 80% of the country’s land mass may become uninhabitable due to global warming.
