The Greek Fire Service reported a fire on the holy Mount Athos, adding that more than 100 firefighters, 35 units of special equipment and 6 aircraft are involved in the process of extinguishing the fire.
The fire broke out in a forest near Agios Andreas on top of Arabis in the north of the peninsula late on Friday evening.
Currently, 112 firefighters, 5 brigades, 35 pieces of equipment, as well as 6 aircraft and two helicopters are working at the scene.
There were no reports of a threat to the monasteries on the mountain. The cause of the fire is still a mystery.
Athos is an independent monastic republic, an autonomous special administrative unit within Greece. There are 20 monasteries.
