federal judge says supreme court should just stfu

A federal judge says the Supreme Court should just “stfu.”

In response to the recent 5-4 decision in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby by the Supreme Court, U.S. District Judge Richard George Kopf harshly criticised the justices on his personal blog for getting too involved in what he sees as controversial cases.

Kopf, who was appointed by George H.W. Bush, wrote, “This term and several past terms have shown that the Court is now doing more harm (division) to our democracy than good by deciding hot-button cases that the Court has the power to avoid.” “It’s time for the Court to “stfu,” as the kids say.”

Kopf put a link to the Urban Dictionary entry for “stfu” to make things clear: “An abbreviation used for the phrase “shut the fuck up” to save time.”

Kopf said that the decision “looks stupid and smells worse” because all five justices who ruled in favour of Hobby Lobby are Catholic men who were picked by Republican presidents.

“While ‘looks’ don’t matter to the logic of the law (and I’m not saying the Justices are actually motivated by such things), we all know from experience that appearances matter to the public’s acceptance of the law,” he wrote.

Kopf has a history of making blunt comments, as Raw Story points out.

After lawmakers in Congress shut down the federal government last fall, the judge said, “It’s time to tell Congress to go to hell.” And earlier this year, Kopf said she regretted writing that women lawyers should “tone it down” and dress more conservatively in court.
