Expectations of rising gas prices for consumers in Germany

The head of the German energy company Uniper, Klaus-Dieter Maubach, did not rule out an increase in additional gas tariffs for German consumers, which, according to him, ensures the reliability of energy supply.

In an interview with ZDF television, Mobach said: “At the outset, one can say that gas tariffs help secure supplies. Russian gas presents the Germans with a difficult choice. It is still unknown whether they should be raised. It depends on the prices on the markets, in this case on the gas markets.”

Mobach noted that if the current “extremely high price level” continues, “there is some possibility that the gas tax will need to be increased.”

In order to support gas importers, from October this year until 2024, Germany will introduce the so-called gas tax, which will amount to 2.4 euro cents per kilowatt-hour. In winter, an energy collapse is expected in Germany due to possible interruptions in Russian gas supplies.

For their part, German Economics Minister Robert Habeck and head of the Federal Grid Agency Klaus Müller have repeatedly urged the country’s citizens to reduce electricity consumption in order to save money.
