European draft resolution on rationing of electricity consumption during peak hours

The European Commission presented today, on Monday, a draft resolution that imposes obligations on the countries of the European Union to rationalize the consumption of electricity during peak hours.

According to the draft, a binding target entails choosing 3 or 4 hours a day to reduce consumption, leaving Member States to choose the time of day.

And Commission President Ursula von der Leyen previously unveiled measures to tackle the energy crisis, including demand reduction, source sharing and diversification, and “huge investments in renewable energy.”

On Monday, European natural gas prices rose 28% to €274 ($272) per megawatt-hour on the first day of trading after Russian energy giant Gazprom halted flows through the vital Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline for indefinite term.

As the energy crisis intensified, EU countries quickly filled gas storage facilities. Warehouses are currently 82% full, well above the 80% target set by officials through November, according to data from Gas Infrastructure Europe.
