Democrat Hakim Jeffries elected Speaker of the US House of Representatives

New York State Representative Hakim Jeffries was elected as the leader of the Democratic Party in the US House of Representatives, succeeding current President Nancy Pelosi, 82.

The intra-party vote, after which the Democrats were to elect the 52-year-old Jeffries as chairman of the party, took place behind closed doors.

As CNN points out, Jeffries has become the first black man elected to head the Democratic Party in the US Congress, which lost a majority in the US House of Representatives in the midterm elections, and will take over as the head of the Democrats next January.

Pelosi, who has previously said she will not seek re-election as a Democratic president but will continue to serve in the House of Representatives, stressed that the election of Jeffries will give the party “energy, new ideas and perspectives”, stressing that she is “grateful that she was the Democratic leader in the House of Representatives.”

Jeffreys has represented New York’s 8th congressional district in the House of Representatives since 2013, and since 2019 he has chaired the House Democratic caucus.

As a result of the November 8 midterm elections, the Democrats lost their majority in the House of Representatives, and control passed to the Republican Party.

What makes the next speaker of the House of Representatives a Republican? Kevin McCarthy, who has so far been the Republican Minority Leader in the House of Representatives, is expected to take over the position soon.
