Declaring a state of emergency in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s acting president, Ranil Wickremesinghe, declared a state of emergency across the country from Monday.

Wickremesinghe has declared a state of emergency in the interests of public safety, the protection of public order and the preservation of supplies and services essential to the life of the community, a statement released in the official gazette said.

It should be noted that the Parliament of Sri Lanka is due to elect a new president on July 20 after the resignation of Gotabay Rajapaksa, who fled to Singapore through the Maldives amid a severe economic crisis in the country.

The names of presidential candidates will be announced tomorrow.
