Cyprus protests against the meeting of the President of Azerbaijan with the leader of the Turkish Cypriots

The Cypriot Foreign Ministry announced Thursday that it had filed formal protests against the Turkish Cypriot leader’s meeting with the Azerbaijani president amid fears of an intensified campaign to support the country’s division.

The ministry expressed “disappointment and regret” at a meeting between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar on Tuesday on the sidelines of the Islamic Solidarity Games in Turkey and demanded that the Azerbaijani government take “corrective steps.”

The ministry said the meeting was contrary to UN Security Council resolutions condemning a multi-year unilateral declaration to establish a separate Turkish state in northern Cyprus, adding that backing the Turkish Cypriot demands could thwart Azerbaijan’s attempt to reach an association agreement with the European Union, which requires Cyprus’ approval. member countries of the Federation.
