Commentary by the American Representative on the Draft Statement of the Conference on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons

Special Representative of the US President for Non-Proliferation Adam Sheinman said that the draft final document of the Conference on the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which was not adopted yesterday, is imperfect.

He noted that the United States, however, regretted that this document was not adopted.

“We are aware that the draft outcome document was incomplete and did not adequately reflect conditions on the ground,” Sheinman added.

According to him, the text of the document “understates the importance of the situation at the nuclear power plant in Zaporozhye.”

At the same time, the US representative accused Russia of creating a radiological threat to Ukraine and Europe.

Prior to this, Andrei Belousov, deputy head of the Russian delegation at the conference, said that false and politicized statements by some delegations regarding Ukraine prevented reaching a consensus on the final position of the conference.

According to him, some delegations came to the above-mentioned event in order to achieve specific political goals at any cost.

The diplomat called the desire of some countries to impose “unacceptable political formulas” on Ukraine “a pure provocation” on the part of those who are ready to sacrifice many years of fruitful work of the Review Conference and use the conference “to settle scores with Russia.” and raise issues not directly related to the Treaty.”
