China urges US to cancel Pelosi visit to Taiwan

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said China will ask Washington to cancel US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan because it violates the One China principle.

“China requires the US to fully comply with the One China principle and the three Sino-US joint communiqués, not arrange for US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to visit Taiwan, stop all official contact with Taiwan, and create tension in the Taiwan Strait.

He noted that China will take decisive action to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity if the US continues its current behavior without regard to Beijing’s position, adding that the US will bear full responsibility for all possible consequences.

The diplomat said that China has repeatedly said that all official contacts between the US and Taiwan officials are unacceptable, stressing that Pelosi’s visit to the island will be a violation of the “one China” principle and the three Sino-US joint communiqués, and will damage the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China and seriously will affect the political basis of relations between Beijing and Washington, it will also send the wrong signal to the forces supporting the island’s independence.

“China strongly opposes,” he added.

Earlier media reported that Pelosi may visit Taiwan in August next year. A US delegation led by Pelosi was originally expected to visit Taiwan last April. And the media then wrote that this visit, which will inevitably cause strong opposition from Beijing, could be the first visit of the speaker of the US House of Representatives to this island since 1997. Later, Drew Hamill, a spokesman for the US House Speaker’s administration, said that Pelosi had been infected with the Corona virus, prompting the US administration to postpone her visit.
