China suspends cooperation with the US in a number of areas in response to Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan

In response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, the Chinese authorities announced a suspension of cooperation with the United States in a number of areas.

According to a statement posted on the website of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, “In particular, Beijing will suspend negotiations with Washington on climate change. China will also stop cooperation with the United States on the repatriation of illegal immigrants, on the provision of criminal law combating cross-border crime and cooperation in the fight against drugs.

In addition, China canceled a working meeting between representatives of the Ministry of Defense of China and the United States.

Beijing also announced the termination of dialogue at the level of regional military leaders of China and the United States, the termination of meetings with American representatives within the framework of the Maritime Security Mechanism.

Earlier in the day, the State Department said it would sanction Pelosi and her family members.

The statement said the measures were taken in response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan despite Beijing’s protests.

China views Taiwan as a province and opposes any contact between Taipei and officials and military personnel of countries with which Beijing has diplomatic relations.

In response to Taipei’s decision to accept Pelosi’s visit, Beijing has sanctioned two Taiwanese funds, suspended supplies of natural sand to the island, and suspended imports of citrus fruits and certain types of fish from Taiwan.

The People’s Liberation Army of China has also launched large-scale military exercises in the Taiwan Strait using live ammunition.
