China reports first case of monkeypox

Chinese authorities have announced the first case of monkeypox in a human who has recently entered the country.

Health authorities in the southwestern city of Chongqing said the man developed symptoms while under quarantine due to the Covid virus.

Under China’s “zero Covid” policy, people entering the country must observe one to two weeks of quarantine upon arrival.

The city’s health committee said the monkey was diagnosed with monkeypox after it developed symptoms, including a rash, and the case was classified as an “imported infection.”

The committee added in the report that the patient is “under central isolation in the hospital and is in a stable condition” and emphasized that “the risk of transmission is low.”

Significantly, Hong Kong reported its first monkeypox virus infection last week in a 30-year-old man who developed symptoms while under a three-day quarantine imposed by the city on arrivals.
