China and South Korea vow to develop closer ties

The foreign ministers of South Korea and China pledged on Tuesday to develop closer ties and maintain stable industrial supply chains at a time of heightened competition between Beijing and Washington.

In separate statements following a meeting in east China’s Qingdao city, South Korean Foreign Minister Pak Jin and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for building on the successful trade ties that have linked the two countries for three decades.

Park and Wang did not comment on whether their talks touched on tensions over US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan last week.

Park and Wang called for maintaining the stability of industrial supply chains, possibly citing concerns that China’s technology policy and US security measures could divide the world into separate markets with incompatible standards and products, slowing innovation and driving up costs.
