Caracas condemns ICC intention to reopen investigation in Venezuela

The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry said the country’s government condemned the decision of the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, to request permission to reopen the investigation into crimes against humanity in Venezuela.

“Venezuela rejects the decision of International Criminal Court Prosecutor Karim Ahmed Khan to apply to the Pre-Trial Chamber to authorize an investigation,” the ministry added.

According to the ministry, Venezuelan authorities provide extensive information on how the government is investigating alleged human rights crimes in the country.

The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry lamented that Karim Khan “retains a clearly biased view of the situation in Venezuela” and bases his request largely on “secondary sources that do not inspire confidence.”

Earlier, ICC prosecutor Karim Khan asked the court to allow him to reopen the investigation into crimes in Venezuela. Khan said that the measures taken by the Venezuelan government in this area are insufficient or have not yet affected the situation.
