Canada’s Sinclair has left ankle, Achilles strain

TORONTO – Canadian captain Christine Sinclair has a left ankle and Achilles tendon strain, according to the National Women’s Soccer League.

Sinclair was hurt last weekend playing for the Portland Thorns. The 32-year-old from Burnaby, B.C., had to be helped off the field after colliding with Sky Blue goalkeeper Brittany Cameron in the Thorns’ 1-0 loss in New Jersey on Saturday.

The NWSL’s official injury report lists Sinclair as out for Portland’s game Sunday against the visiting Washington Spirit. The Thorns (6-8-4) have two regular season games remaining.

There were fears the injury may be serious when Thorns coach Paul Riley reported Sinclair as saying she “heard a pop” coming off the field.

Canadian national team coach John Herdman said Thursday his understanding was the injury was not that serious, which seems to be backed up by the injury report Friday.

The Canadian team medical staff is scheduled to be in Portland this weekend to see for themselves.
