Bulgarian president calls for early parliamentary elections

Bulgarian President Rumen Radev on Monday called for early parliamentary elections, appointing an interim government, BNT reported.

The Cabinet of Ministers, headed by Kirill Petkov, resigned at the end of June last year due to the crisis in the country. Attempts to form a new government failed, and in accordance with the constitution, Radev signed a decree on August 2 to dissolve the country’s parliament. Early elections are scheduled for October 2.

By another decree, the president appointed an interim government whose powers will come into force on August 2. It will be headed by Dzheleb Dunev, who previously held the post of Minister of Labor.

Bulgaria has been suffering from instability since the summer of 2020 due to massive protests against former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, who has been in power almost uninterruptedly since 2009.

Following this year’s third legislative election, activist and pro-European Kirill Petkov initiated a four-party coalition in December last year. But this fragmented alliance was ultimately not spared internal tensions exacerbated by the war in Ukraine.
