BRICS Countries Express Support for Russia’s Chairmanship in 2024

Introduction

According to a message published on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry following the meeting of the heads of foreign affairs of the BRICS countries on the sidelines of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly: “Brazil, India, China and South Africa expressed full support for Russia’s chairmanship of the BRICS group in 2024 and the holding of the sixteenth summit in Kazan, Prussia.

Early Contacts with New BRICS Members

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov previously said that Russia, which will assume the chairmanship of the group in 2024, “will not wait until January 1”, but will begin contacts with the new BRICS members in advance and help them “get to work.”

Expansion of BRICS Membership

It is noteworthy that the decision to expand the group’s membership was made during the BRICS summit in Johannesburg, South Africa on August 22-24 last year.

From January 1, 2024, Argentina, Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia will join the group, which includes Russia, China, India, Brazil and South Africa.
