Borrell: Serbia’s Ties with Russia Contradict the Path to European Integration

EU Commissioner for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell said that Serbia’s close relations with Russia are contrary to the course of European integration.

Borrell said at a press conference after the meeting of the Council of the European Union at the level of foreign ministers: “Serbia must understand that close relations with Russia are incompatible with the European path of this country.”

Borrell emphasized “the need to meet the demands for the normalization of Serbia’s relations with Kosovo”.

Earlier, the European Parliament regarded anti-Russian sanctions as a condition for Serbia’s membership in the European Union.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić also confirmed that his country will not allow any party to impose its dictate on Belgrade and force it to join the sanctions against Russia, as well as determine the framework of the country’s foreign policy.

Vučić said he expected increased pressure on Serbia to implement the sanctions against Russia.
